Burgers are trending hard in São Paulo. Every person we talk to seems to have an opinion on which burger joint reigns supreme. We’ve sampled our fair share of burger spots in São Paulo and some of the more memorable food we had came from Butcher’s Market. Founded by Korean-American Ryan Hansang Kim, Butcher’s Market was recognized for having the Best Burger in São Paulo by Veja Magazine only after six months of opening with the help of Brazilian Chef Camargo.
Located in São Paulo’s Itaim Bibi district, Butcher’s Market interior suggests that the restaurant may have been a dive bar in it’s previous life with a long bar that stretches from the entrance to the back of the restaurant. Butcher’s Market gives off some illicit hipster vibes but that’s often the case when you’re working with something like burgers. The walls decorated with illustrations of different cuts of meat on one side of the restaurant while the wall behind the bar is covered in chalkboard paint with menu items scribbled onto it.
The menu is simply broken down into appetizers, salads, shakes, burgers, desserts, drinks and other dishes including pastas, barbecue ribs, eggs benedict and steaks. At this point of our trip, we were starting to get a little tired of regular burgers, so we ordered the hamburger steak and pulled pork kimchi burger. Both items are technically not burgers, but overall the dishes at Butcher’s Market had great flavor and is a restaurant we’d definitely return to.
Corn on the Cob (R$17 or $7.70 USD). The grilled corn was delicious – sweet, lathered in butter, mayonnaise, grated parmesan and just a touch of cayenne pepper.
Hamburger Steak (R$35 or $15.85 USD). The hamburger steak was essentially a burger patty served in a skillet topped with a fried egg with a side of salad and fries. I’m a sucker for fried eggs on burger patties so this had my name written all over it. The burger patty itself was delicious with good flavor, but the sauce surrounding it at the bottom of the skillet was way too salty. Serving it on the side would have made a major difference.
Pulled Pork Kimchi Burger (R$34 or $15.35 USD). The pulled pork kimchi burger was on point – moist, tender, flavorful with a Korean kick.
Ice Cream Sandwich (R$25 or $11.30 USD). The ice cream sandwich hit the spot, but it wasn’t anything that special or worth over $5 USD in my opinion.
