Hong Kong finally has it’s very own awesome purveyors of macarons, Ladurée! The wildly popular Parisian patisserie everyone adores has got Hong Kong dwellers and tourists going CRAY, lining up for hours for a taste of Ladurée’s delectable macarons. Hong Kong’s highly anticipated first shop opened it’s doors on the 1st of December in Harbour City Mall. I’ve never seen a line this long for macarons, but the wait is definitely worth it. Huge thanks to my amazing friend Season Chan (CSON Eats) who incidentally works within Harbour City Mall for snagging a box of these bad boys for me! Here’s a little peep at what’s in store!
A box of 15 assorted macarons which cost $345 HKD or approximately $45 USD. 1 of every flavor except for Pistachio and Santo-Domingo Chocolate because they were sold out =(
Unfortunately, a few of these took a beating through the TST crowd and the MTR (subway ride) home.
Praliné (Praline): it took us a while to figure out what flavor this was at first. I thought it was hazelnut marshmallow, but the filling was smooth, nutty and buttery which hinted at the Praliné.
Cassis Violette (Blackcurrant Violet) and Vanille (Vanilla): The Cassis Violette (pictured on the left) was berry delicious with a sweet yet bold jelly filling reminiscent of Ribena. Vanilla is often underrated, but I love the simplicity of the Vanille with the strong vanilla bean essence (pictured on the right).
Café (Coffee), Framboise (Raspberry), L’ Incroyable Guimauve Amande (Almond Marshmallow). The L’ Incroyable Guimauve Amande (pictured on the bottom right) was effing incredible! The best macaron I’ve ever had. I love all almond everything and this macaron definitely hit the spot. The marshmallow filling was absolutely perfect, infused with almond and super fluffy!
The Café (pictured on the left) was aromatic but not overwhelming with a smooth creamy filling.
I thought I’d prefer the Cassis Violette over the Framboise (pictured on the top) but I thought the texture of the raspberry filling with the tiny raspberry seeds was delicious.
From left to right – Noix de Coco (Coconut), Pétale de Rose (Rose Petal) and L’ Incroyable Guimauve Noisette (Hazelnut Marshmallow).
I friggin’ LOVE coconut so the Noix de Coco was another one of my top 5’s! It was super fragrant, sweet, and fluffy with tiny flakes of coconut. So good! As for the Pétale de Rose, I know this is popular amongst the female population, but I wasn’t feelin’ it. I’ve never been into flowers, I don’t even like the smell of flowers or floral perfume. Probably why I don’t like eating anything that tastes like flowers either. I’d fux with it again but it wouldn’t be my first choice. L’ Incroyable Guimauve Noisette was another goodie, über nutty and the marshmallow filling is the SHIIITT!!!
Caramel Fleur de Sel (Salted Caramel).
LOVE LOVE LOVE this Caramel Fleur de Sel macaron! The filling is sweet, sticky and absolutely amazing. A tad more of that salt and it would be perfect.
Black and Yellow. Liquorice and Citron (Lemon). I actually had no idea that the black macaron was liquorice. It wasn’t listed on my macaron legend, so when I tasted it, I had no clue what it was. I looked it up online, and it happened to be liquorice! I don’t normally eat liquorice and I think it’s the WORST flavor ever, but this wasn’t bad and definitely fooled me. Nevertheless it sort of defeats the purpose of having a liquorice flavor in the first place if the flavor isn’t accurate. The Citron was delicious and tasted like a lemon meringue pie!
From top to bottom, left to right: Chocolat (Chocolate), L’ Incroyable Guimauve Citron – Citron Vert (Lemon Lime Marshmallow), and L’ Incroyable Guimauve Violette (Violet Marshmallow).
L’ Incroyable Guimauve Citron – Citron Vert (Lemon Lime Marshmallow). This was another shocker and was in my top 5! I love the sharp citrus lime and lemon acidic kick with the sweet fluffy marshmallow. AMAZEBALLS!
The Chocolat is SOOO FRIGGIN GOOD. This is the best chocolate macaron I’ve ever had. The filling is rich and creamy with a strong chocolate kick.
Another one I could have skipped was the L’ Incroyable Guimauve Violette. It was too floral and perfumy for my liking.
Overall, I’d have to say Ladurée is by far the BEST out there with a set of MAD maracron making skills! I could eat these all day everyday – even the ones I liked the least. Here’s a little summary of what I thought was THE BEST to the not amazing but still pretty effing legit.
